Superstitions

Read the post at The Author Gang

Stevie Wonder had a hit song back in the early seventies called Superstition and it was a huge hit!
A few of the lyrics included:
When you believe in things you don’t understand
Then you suffer
Superstition ain’t the way.

Well, it may not be the way for most folks, but many still are superstitious and have superstitions which they may have inherited from their ancestors or a certain culture.

Got That Special Formula for Writing Magic?

Beg, borrow, steal, or create your own?

Any way you look at it, it’s a tough decision if your use magic in your writing. As writers, we do our research searching for that perfect incantation, spell or ritual to use in our story, but one size does not fit all. With that we need to think which is the best kind of magic for our characters, and is this a good fit?

Magic is unique to the creator and usually is specifically designed to work for that person with which their intention has been set for such purpose. So why not make it unique to your character? Now grant you, ancient spells have been published, along with numerous books on spells from healing simple ailments to love spells. Many of these are hundreds of years old and still being used by many. New spell books have emerged with the ever-growing Wiccan popularity.

As writers, we are indeed creators of our own fictional world and so many are opting to use a hybrid form of traditional magic or create their own. You hold the power, so why not come up with your own form?

I have a few friends who are Wiccan and traditional Witches and have been told to be careful when altering or borrowing a spell for a story. The best practices are to write it in the fictional sense— or if you do borrow a real spell, change the wording so that you are not intentionally practicing real magic if you have not had a background in this area.

Let’s face it—magic is magic and can be unpredictable. I can tell you that I learned this the hard way—I will save that for another post. (You’ve been warned).

As for my writing, I have incorporated goddess magic, high Egyptian and Greek priestess magic, Italian Strega magic and a bit of old witchcraft.

I have borrowed from old texts, various forms of research and modified old ones. I’ve found that the best forms of magic and spells are the ones I create. I thought it would be difficult at first, but it actually has turned out to be fun! Just imagine the possibilities!

So get that pen or athame ready and have fun with it, but make sure to practice safe magic.

Promo Day at #OurAuthorGang

Book Promo Sunday

We're starting a new tradition at #OurAuthorGang.
Every Thursday we'll add a book promo post to our Facebook page such as this POST

Image may contain: phone and text

We'll pick four books from the post to promote on our blog.
Enjoy this week's selection:

Epic fantasy
“Cas Peace's Artesans of Albia trilogy immediately sweeps you away: the drama starts with King's Envoy, continues unabated in King's Champion, and climaxes in King's Artesan, yet each volume is complete, satisfying. The Artesan series propels you into a world so deftly written that you see, feel, touch, and even smell each twist and turn. These nesting novels are evocative, hauntingly real. Smart. Powerful. Compelling. The trilogy teems with finely drawn characters, heroes and villains, and societies worth knowing; with stories so organic and yet iconic you know you've found another home—in Albia.”

**10th Anniversary Edition**
Mum used to tell me there were no monsters in the closet, magic was an illusion, and other worlds were pure fantasy. She lied.
Three years after her mother’s death, Cassandra is dealing with the reality of an alternate world, magical powers, and monsters.
Failed by the police, the local preternatural groups come to her for help. Drawn into the investigation and mystery of the Soul Market, she must find those missing before it becomes too late.
Cassandra will stop at nothing to help those she now calls friends, even if it costs her everything. Something is going bump in the night – it’s time for her to go bump back!
A gripping supernatural novel set in post-blitz Scotland, the first of an upcoming series.
“No man in this world may boast of his might, he is awake in the morning and dead at night.”
Widowed in World War 2, Annette and her young son face a completely different life as they exchange the devastation of post-blitz London for the slow pace of a small village. The house they have inherited is old, its bones still settling, creaking noises in the dead of night and the murmur of scritch-scritch in the walls. Located outside the village of Lochnagar, it’s been empty for many years.
The unfolding of how the Clockmaker made his plans, his meticulous preparations and macabre creations, all builds up to a series of gruesome, horrific murders. These have just one end in view: his release from that which has held him captive for centuries.
A chilling supernatural novel with characters you’ll come to care for, The Clockmakerwill interest anyone who fears the dark – and what might lie in the shadows...

Favorite Reviews #3

My favorite reviews

Book reviews (good or bad) provide important feedback to the authors and without reviews, a book gets lost in the thousands of other books that are released every month.

Every author appreciates and values the opinion of readers but we’re strongly discouraged from engaging with readers and thank them for their reviews on publishing sites.

The authors of Our Author Gang celebrate and appreciate the readers by posting our favorite reviews between September 10 and 22. Every day a different author of the group posts about their books and quote from their readers’ favorite reviews.

Thank you for your interest in our books and happy reading!

Chasing Victory was the first book I published. I am beyond grateful for my reader’s support and their wonderful reviews. The review below is one of my favorites because it makes me laugh, while at the same time making me extremely proud that I followed my dream.

"WOW!! This is the kind of debut novel that every author dreams about writing!

Chasing Victory is perfect and masterful blending of science fiction, romance, and the paranormal into one tight perfectly delivered book. Page after page, I found myself becoming more and more engrossed with the story and its characters. You can even ask my husband when I tell you that he missed a meal because of this book. I think one of the biggest reasons why this book resonated with me so much is that it pulls on my career heart strings as I am a cancer research scientist. It’s not often that you see a bit of science thrown into a book such as this.

Joanne’s characters are very well thought out and developed. Her hero is the perfect balance of intelligence, brass, and sex appeal. Tristan will melt your panties off with a smile while boggling you with his wit and intelligence. Yet, I am pulled more towards Victory. She’s special to me both in the sheer fact she’s a sassy female scientist (YOU GO GIRL) and her additional abilities. I have often wondered what my cats or puppies are thinking at times and she gets to do that!! Outside of Dr. Doolittle and the wild world of werewolves and shifters, do you ever see a human woman with these kinds of abilities!! Braxton is the perfect anti-hero. He’s willingly to do whatever it takes for his company and his ideals to succeed including kidnapping a woman and forcing her to work on her pet project. Just the sheer evilness of man who threatens peoples live in the name of science just screams evil genius to me!

Joanne Jaytanie has delivered the perfect paranormal romance & suspense novel. Like me, I bet you’ll find it difficult to put it down. So before you pick this one up, and I know you will, you might want to just clear your calendar for a few hours. I look forward to reading by Joanne!" – Lauren, Saints and Sinners Books

One of my biggest concerns when releasing a new book is ~ will my readers like this book as much as the last book.

“Joanne Jaytanie shows us that "Chasing Victory" was not a fluke. Her talents again shine in "Payton's Pursuit" with well developed characters and a plot that flows smoothly and quickly. The drama never slows as it builds to it climatic end. The chemistry between Payton and Collin is off the charts but the chasm they must cross to reach forgiveness and love is wide and one they are not always willing to traverse. Adventure, intrigue, suspense, paranormal abilities and romance abound. Join the second Winters sister as she learns about her abilities and connection to Collin and some of the others on campus. Another great read to be savored and enjoyed.”
- DelAnne for NetGalley

There’s nothing I love more than a reader saying that they couldn’t put my book down.

“Wow! Just wow! I’m finding it hard to express just how much I loved Willow’s Discovery. I may be wrong, but I think I may have achieved a new PB when I finished reading this book. I just didn’t want to put it down and I got a bit snarky when life got in the way of my reading time.

I’ve read the first two books in the Winter Sisters series. Willow didn’t play a big part in either of these books so I wasn’t sure if I would love Willow’s Discovery as much as I loved the first two books. I was wrong, but I’m glad I was.

The books in the Winter Sisters series tick all the boxes as far as I’m concerned – characters to love or hate, hot guys, suspense and the icing on the cake, paranormal content. This book held me in its grip from the very first page right until the last. It was full of unexpected twists and it definitely wasn’t predictable…” - Karen from A Thousand Lives Book Blog
I’m extremely honored that Chanticleer Book Reviews gave each of The Winters Sisters glowing reviews. Willow’s Discovery and Corralling Kenzie were awarded, First in Category for Paranormal Awards, in the Chanticleer International Writing Competition, for two consecutive years. Thank you.

“…For fans who are caught up in the lives of the Winters sisters, they are in for a big surprise with Jaytanie’s fourth installment. Up to this point, books one thru three have mainly concentrated on Victory, Payton, and Willow and KG’s sinister schemes directed toward the girls. But with the addition of the sisters’ neighbor Kenzie, Jaytanie opens the door to a whole new world of outsiders who have fallen prey to DNA tampering. Although pseudo-realism in design, this chilling realm into the dark side of medicine is reminiscent of the grisly experiments on children throughout history.

Jaytanie does a stellar job balancing the bad and ugly with the good, and “good” comes in various forms, the most obvious from the alpha-male SOCOM team and the Winters sisters. But on a deeper level, Jaytanie has created relatable characters; their near-realistic personas are riddled with strengths and weakness, even on a romantic playing field. Certainly, when Logan and Kenzie get their mojo on, it’s steamy. Leading up to those moments, Jaytanie sets an example of what a beautiful friendship should look like—slow but steady.

As with all of the books in this series, "Corralling Kenzie" functions perfectly well as a stand-alone read. There is richness when readers start from the very beginning of the series. Let’s just say that Jaytanie is a master of all things and will thrill and delight new readers as well as her loyal fans with this new installment.

The exciting aspect of this series is that book four does not complete the set. Closing on a major cliffhanger, Jaytanie has much more in store for her beloved audience. Stay tuned!” – Chanticleer Book Reviews

A heartfelt "thank you" to every reader who has left a review.
