Magical Openings
Christina Weigand
Today is my husband’s birthday. On Monday of this week Stan Lee passed away at the age of 95. I’m not sure what these two things have in common except for the fact that they both have touched my life.
Neither was someone that came into my life when I was a child. My husband and I met when we were in high school. I was a junior, he was a senior. A year after I graduated, we were married and a year later we had our first child. So, at our ages we have been in each other’s lives longer than we haven’t. We have grown-up together, sometimes one more than the other.
We have four children together and I think that’s where my connection to Stan Lee comes from. As a child I wasn’t much into comic books. I liked to read and might have to admit that I looked down on comic books a little. They were for someone who didn’t like to read.
My sons however did like to read and read comic books. I still didn’t get on the bandwagon. Jump ahead several years and my youngest daughter also likes comic books and collects them. Marvel starts releasing their Avenger series of movies. My husband and I along with my daughter attempt to see all the movies when they are released and the ones that really impress me, we have proceeded to purchase the DVD when it becomes available. My daughter, Ana and I have had extensive discussions about things that happen in the movies and what could possibly happen in future movies. And not to slight the DC universe, we have also explored them, but this is not about them.
So back to Stan Lee and my husband. Once I started watching the movies, I wanted to know more; I wanted to know how close the movies were following the original comic books, I wanted to know what was going to happen to my favorite characters. Ana and I would have long discussions about the stories and characters. I even went out and purchased a comic book about a character that hasn’t been introduced in the movies (I’m not sure he ever will, but that’s beside the point). I’m hooked, maybe not a die-hard, maybe a fledgling, but fully in the universe.
I’m still not sure that I have made the link between my husband and Stan Lee except for the fact that major events in their lives happened in the same week or that they have both opened my world albeit in different ways.
So, to wrap this rambling up; Happy Birthday to my husband, Al and Rest in Peace Stan Lee. Thank you both for adding magic to my life; for supplying the openings in my world.
Before I forget, I promised a Word Count. So here it is: 14,090.
