Paranormal Reads for Teens

Paranormal Reads for Teens
Posted by Tricia Drammeh

A couple of weeks ago, I posted my Halloween reading recommendations for children. Today, I'd like to share some of my favorite spooky books for teenagers and young adults. While these books might not be specifically for Halloween, they are definitely spooky enough to enjoy during the creepiest time of the year! And, fear not! These books are spook-tacular for adult readers too!

TWILIGHT on Kindle
TWILIGHT by Stephenie Meyer gets a bad rap amongst those in the horror community who prefer their vampires to be sparkle-free, but I think the series is wonderful for teens and young adults. It's a sweet romance with suspense, and though Bella's relationship with Edward is not always altogether healthy, there are some good moral lessons in this series. As an adult, I enjoyed these books. If you don't know what TWILIGHT is about, or if you need a refresher, here's the blurb:

Isabella Swan's move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife-between desire and danger. Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

BLIND SIGHT on Kindle

BLIND SIGHT by Nicole Storey is a book I'd recommend for high-school age (and older) readers. The writing is wonderfully descriptive and the plot is fast-paced. There are definitely some suspenseful and scary moments in this book! Here's the blurb:

Jordan has visions of monsters, demons, and death. Seventeen, orphaned, and born into the family business, she doesn’t have friends, she doesn’t have choices. Her uncle, older brothers, and a few annoying angels dominate her life, demanding she tow their lines – and the punishment is severe when those lines are crossed.

When Jordan is ordered to help hunt down a monster, she’s not sure which she dreads more: the elusive, blood-thirsty creature or spending time in a cramped backwoods cabin with a brother who despises her. To make matters worse, a demon shows up and warns Jordan that she could be her family’s next assignment.

In a game between Good and Evil where God seems to have tapped out early, lines are blurred and not everything is as it seems. Jordan learns a little too late that the real monster is closer than she thinks.

LIAR on Amazon
I read LIAR by Justine Larbalestier years ago when I belonged to a book club. Brilliantly written with numerous twists and turns, this book made for some lively conversation in our group. The story is on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspenseful and is one I'd surely love to read again. Here's what it's about:

The ultimate unreliable narrator takes readers on a thrill ride in this highly acclaimed novel. Prepare to grasp for truth until the very last page.

Micah is a liar. That's the one thing she won't lie about. Over the years, she's duped her classmates, her teachers, and even her parents. But when her boyfriend Zach dies under brutal circumstances, Micah sets out to tell the truth. At first the truth comes easily. Other truths are so unbelievable, so outside the realm of normal, they must be a lie. And the honest truth is buried so deep in Micah's mind even she doesn't know if it's real.

THE SEANCE on Kindle

And, yes, I'm going to go ahead and include my own book in this list! THE SEANCE is by far the spookiest book I've ever written. I actually scared myself when writing it! While there are some suspenseful and scary scenes in this book, the language is very clean, so I would feel comfortable (as a parent and an author) recommending this book to kids as young as twelve. Here's what it's all about:

Ninth grade can be a nightmare when you don’t fit in at school, your crush chooses someone else, and your parents tell you they’re having a new baby. Abby was prepared for normal high school problems. She wasn’t prepared for a demon.

Abby has always been fascinated by the paranormal, but after an ill-fated séance, she discovers not all Spirits are benign. A dark entity unleashed during the summoning sets out to destroy Abby, and within days, she loses her best friend, incurs the wrath of her parents, and becomes a prisoner in her own home. With time quickly running out, she assembles an unlikely group of helpers: the most hated guy in school, a retired psychic, and the cute clerk from her favorite bookstore. Unless the demon is defeated, Abby and her new baby brother won’t stand a chance.

I would love to read some of your book recommendations! If there's a spooky book that you've loved (that would be appropriate for teens and young adults), please let us know in the comment section.

Great selection of books. There is only one I haven't read on that list. That is Liar, so I know what book to move on next. My daughter and I read both Blind Sight and The Seance together.

Great choices! I'm not a Twilight fan, I couldn't make it past the first couple of pages, but this isn't about me. Teens LOVE these books and your list is great, Tricia! Thank you so much!!

Thanks, Ruth! I remember taking my daughter to see the Twilight movie for her birthday, so maybe I have a higher tolerance for it than most. My daughter was obsessed with it for a long time!

Nice list although I would have to disagree with Twilight, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks, Chris. People seemed to have some very mixed feelings about Twilight, so you're definitely not the only one who feels that way!

Unfortunately, the films did nothing for me so I may never go back to read Twighlight, but I'm very interested in all the other recommendations. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Toi. I had to take my daughter to see all these movies. Actually, I ended up taking 10 preteens to see one of the movies for my daughter's birthday, so that was an experience!

+Tricia Drammeh Wow, sounds a little scary. That's a lo tof preteens. ;)
