A List of My Favorite Dragon Books

Favorite Dragon Books

Christina Weigand

What are your top ten favorite dragon books- what makes them good?

I have read so many good books that it was hard to narrow it down to ten. So the first thing I did is divide the books into categories: Books where dragons are either the main characters or interact with the main characters on an extreme level. The other category was books with dragons in them.

Then I decided to go with the first category and still there were too many to list, so here is a partial list of my favorite dragon books. Some of these books are part of a series so I have listed the author first and then the series, because in most cases I was enamored with the entire series.

Bryan Davis:
 Dragons in our Midst series
Oracles of Fire series
Starlighter series
Dragons of Starlight series
Children of the Bard series

Chris d’Lacey: The Last Dragon Chronicles (8 book series)

Christopher Paolini: The Inheritance Cycle ( 4 Book series)

Donita K. Paul: Dragonkeeper Chronicles (5 book series)

Karina Fabian: Magic, Mensa & Mayhem, Live and Let Fly

Daniel Arenson: Requiem for Dragons Trilogy, Flame of Requiem Trilogy

Naomi Novik: Temeraire Series (9 Book series, although until now I have only read eight)

Salvador Mercer: The Black Dragon (there are other books in this series that I have yet to read)

Nancy Lee Parish: DragonBlade Series (two book series)

Anne McCaffrey : Dragonriders of Pern

So why do I like these books? The first and most obvious is that they contain dragons that have an active role in the story. The stories are not just about the humans but also the dragons. Whether they transform into dragons or are dragons all along, they speak to people, they are part of the action, more so than say a horse or a dog. I grant you that sometimes our pets are closer to us than the people in our lives, but these dragons for the most part are more than pets, and sometimes more human than some of the humans in the stories.

Some of the books, like those of Bryan Davis and Donita K. Paul have a faith theme to them, sometimes it is an obvious belief in God and in other cases there is an underlying current of a belief in a higher power.

Others like Naomi Novik are historical fantasies, where she takes a period in history and looks at it from a different perspective, and says what if there had been dragons in this time period.

Others are just really fun reads that draw me in slowly and then hold me there until I finish the series. I find myself buying the next book as soon as I finish one. The story is engrossing and the characters well rounded and filled out. They become a part of my family and I am loathed to be parted from them at the end of the series. Sometimes I have to take a break for a few days and let them slowly exit my life. All the authors and so many others that I didn’t mention either because they didn’t have dragons in their books, or their dragons didn’t play such a prominent role write a good story and I often can’t wait to get my hands on their next book whether it be part of the series or a whole new world for me to glide into.

They have created worlds and characters for me to escape too, to leave the confines of life and soar to new heights, new worlds. They inspire me to do the same when I write my own books and show me the way to do it.

Try a few of these out and escape to a new world with me. I would be remiss
if I didn’t mention my own books here. For a soaring adventure with princes and princessess, kings and queens, wizards and adepts and of course dragons,

Wow, what a nice selection of dragon stories! I never really read any dragon book written for young adults or adults besides a few children's stories when I was young, but you have peaked my interest enough to make me check out these books, including yours :)

Chris I’ve been meaning to ask if a seven year old could read your books. My daughter loves dragons. If not any ideas? Either way I’m so glad you wrote this post. My dragons always like meeting new friends.

I had a ten year old write a review for it. I think depending on the seven year old they may be able to read the books.

+Chris Weigand thanks Chris I’ll see what she thinks.

I must say that I have thus far read only one book with a dragon, a kid lit book. After your blog piece, I will consider reading more with dragons, and I love tying in faith and God.

Thanks Joe I haven't read all of McCaffrey's books but the ones I read I loved.

+Chris Weigand -- I've read most of her dragon books, and a couple of the "prequels," too. Read the first 3 YA series of Harper Hall, but never went further than that.

Dragons do have a deep mystique about them and many have claimed to have them as their animal guide. They are known for their wisdom and fortitude. Maybe the dragon is your spirit guide as you have such a passion here. Great post, Chris.

I came into dragon lore and dragon stories late in life compared to angels, vampires and werewolves, but I love them now. Need to catch up with you.

I'm the opposite and came to angels, vampires and werewolves late. I didn't realize dragons were hanging out in my head until I started writing seventeen years ago.

+Chris Weigand That's prettu cool.

Great selection of dragon books Christina. Yours do sound interesting. My introduction to dragons came from The Wizard of Earthsea by the late, great, Ursula K. Le Guin.

There are so many wonderful dragon books out there and your books look really interesting, Christina. When I think of dragon books that first one to come to mind is Game of Thrones, closely followed by The Hobbit. But I also I love Amy Bearce's Dragon's Redeemer.
