Social sites want you to pay for posts on your pages to be seen, but if you share links on your profile, they show it to a lot more people for free (personal experience) If there are comments on the posts on the blog, Google picks it up as popular, and shows it on top of the search.

Book posts don’t generate a lot of interest neither on blogs nor on social sites(personal experience) because showing a book (buy me-buy me) post in the reader’s face makes them click off to find something interesting on other blogs. But when you post about interesting facts, write fun anecdotes, personal experiences, travel, cooking (especially cooking disasters) hobbies, pets etc. and add your author link at the end of your post, readers are a lot more likely to click your link to find out about you and your books.

Stand-alone author websites and blogs

Unless you already have thousands of followers on your website and you keep up with regular interesting posts, I see the future of less-visited websites. They will disappear somewhere in cyberspace if you don’t pay for regular advertisements.

The history of this group blog:

https://asmallgangofauthors.blogspot.com/

A group of us started writing daily blog posts, taking turns. The idea was to have interesting posts every day by one of the authors, then everyone in the group shared the posts and left a comment. The blog became very popular quickly, and the posts had a lot of views. But then, in 2019, the authors started dropping out because they saw more potential in social site groups and pages.

If we'd stayed together and continued the blog, the authors of the group would have no problem with the social site rule changes today because we'd have a stable, popular platform to promote our books. Well, it didn't happen, the authors didn't see the long-term benefits of blogging together.

I've been keeping up the blog with occasional posts, but of course, with a lot fewer views. A group of authors could make the blog exceptionally successful again. I've been writing blog posts on my website since 2012, but understandably, I could never make it as successful as the Author Gang blog was from 2017 to 2019. Readers and viewers stay and read the blog posts because 6-7 authors can deliver a lot more interesting reading material than one author alone.

  1. This is a group of amazingly talented people and could be so much better if everyone helped each other. We would all succeed!
